The World No. 4 has looked quite compact at the US Open thus far. He will take on America’s Jenson Brooksby in the third round.
The third seed has been having a dream season. He won titles at Rio de Janeiro, Miami, Barcelona, and Madrid. Prior to the US Open, he took part in the Cincinnati Masters and reached the quarterfinals, before losing to Cameron Norrie.
The Spaniard began his campaign against Argentina’s Sebastian Baez. Alcaraz won the first two sets and led the third set 2-0 when Baez retired because of suffering an injury. The 19-year-old won his second-round match against another Argentine – Federico Coria in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, 7-5.
The World No. 43 reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 33 on 13 June 2022. Brooksby made it to the finals of the Dallas Open. Reilly Opelka defeated him. The 21-year-old also reached the finals of the Atlanta Open, where he lost to Alex de Minaur.
At Flushing Meadows, Brooksby started with a comprehensive performance against World No. 88 Dusan Lajovic. The Serbian lost the first couple of sets before retiring midway through the third. In the second round, Brooksby defeated the Cincinnati Masters champion Borna Coric in straight sets.
The head-to-head stands at 0-0 as Carlos Alcaraz and Jenson Brooksby have not faced each other before.
Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in straight sets.
