The World No. 7 Casper Ruud locks horns with an upbeat Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals of the ongoing US Open competition.
The Norwegian tennis pro has had a memorable 2022. He has already bagged three titles and has now reached the US Open quarterfinals for the first time in his career.
Ruud began his US Open 2022 campaign with a comprehensive win in straight sets against Kyle Edmund. He followed it up with a comeback win against Tim van Rijthoven in the second round. In round three, the 23-year-old defeated home favorite Tommy Paul in a riveting five-set affair. Ruud defeated Corentin Moutet in four sets in the round of 16 to set up a clash with Matteo Berrettini.
The Italian tennis pro has had a year worth remembering as well. He bagged two titles and reached the Australian Open semifinal before being ousted by eventual champion Rafael Nadal. The 26-year-old has reached his second consecutive quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows. He suffered a loss against Novak Djokovic last year.
So far in the tournament, Berrettini has defeated the likes of Nicolas Jarry, Hugo Grenier, Andy Murray, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. He won against Jarry in straight sets. Against Grenier and Murray, the World No. 14 took four sets. In the fourth-round match against Fokina, Berrettini had to dig deep to win in five sets.
