The World No. 16 Diego Schwartzman will take on World No. 26 Frances Tiafoe in the third round of the US Open on Saturday.
The Argentine has not won a title this season but has had some decent outings. He made it to the finals of the Argentina Open and the Rio Open. He also reached the French Open quarterfinals before being ousted by Novak Djokovic. Schwartzman also semifinals at the Cordoba Open and the Barcelona Open.
At this year’s US Open, Schwartzman lost the first couple of sets against Jack Sock in the first round before buckling the American in the third round. Sock had to retire during the fourth set owing to an injury, which meant that the Argentine progressed to the second round. Alexei Popyrin was his next opponent and the 30-year-old defeated the Australian in straight sets.
The 22nd-seeded Tiafoe made it to the Estoril Open final and the semifinals at the Atlanta Open in what has been a promising season for him.
The 24-year-old has reached the fourth round in the last couple of years at Flushing Meadows. Tiafoe has looked ominous in the couple of matches he has played so far in the competition. He started off with a win against compatriot Marcos Giron in straight sets. In the second round, he triumphed over Jason Kubler, once again in straight sets.
Diego Schwartzman leads the head-to-head 2-1.
Prediction: Frances Tiafoe to win in five sets.
