Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova takes on World No. 8 Jessica Pegula in the fourth round of the US Open on Monday.
The 32-year-old came into the US Open on the back of a solid campaign at the Cincinnati Masters, where she finished runner-up. She has also won a title this year, and it came at the Eastbourne International. The former World No. 2 is one win away from reaching her third US Open quarterfinal.
Kvitova began her campaign with a win against Erika Andreeva 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. The World No. 21 got a walkover from Anhelina Kalinina in the second round. Kvitova won her third-round match against another two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (12-10).
She hasn’t won a title as yet in 2022 but she made it to the final at the Madrid Open. At the Canadian Open, Simona Halep ousted her in the semi-final stage. At the recently concluded Cincinnati Masters, Pegula lost in the quarterfinals against eventual champion Caroline Garcia.
In the first round, Pegula defeated Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic comprehensively in straight sets. The American followed it up with another convincing win against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets. In the third round, Pegula defeated China’s Yue Yuan 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-0.
The head-to-head stands at 2-0 in favor of Petra Kvitova. Their last meeting came at Doha last year when the Czech won 6-4, 6-4.
Prediction: Jessica Pegula to win in three sets.
