The former World No. 1 – Serena Williams has delayed her retirement with a couple of solid performances at the US Open. She will take on Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the US Open.
The American legend is on the last lap in her illustrious career. Williams didn’t enter the US Open on the back of promising results. At Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Masters, Williams bowed out in the first round. She won her first-round match at the Canadian Open but suffered a loss in the second round to Belinda Bencic.
At the US Open, Williams outplayed Danka Kovinic in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. The 23-time Grand Slam champion followed up with a huge win against World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-2.
The Australian tennis pro has not had a great 2022, but she reached the quarterfinals at 5 tournaments. Her most notable performance was reaching the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Championships, where she was ousted by eventual winner Elena Rybakina.
Tomljanovic began her US Open campaign with a straight-set win against Karolina Muchova 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). The World No. 46 won her next match Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina. The 33-year-old outplayed Tomljanovic in the first set but the Australian came back strongly to win the match 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Ajla Tomljanovic and Serena Williams have not faced each other in the past and therefore, the head-to-head sits at 0-0.
Prediction: Serena Williams to win in three sets.
