The 2-time Australian Open champion and former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka will lock horns with another former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova, in what promises to be a pulsating round of 16 match at the US Open.
Victoria Azarenka
The Belarusian has not had a season to remember. Except for her quarter-final appearances at Adelaide and Washington DC, her performances have not been up to her lofty standards.
In the first round, Azarenka defeated America’s Ashlyn Krueger in the first round in three sets. She didn’t look comfortable during the match. However, the veteran produced much better performances in her next couple of matches against Marta Kostyuk and Petra Martic, winning both of them in straight sets.
Karolina Pliskova
The 30-year-old has not won a title this year. However, she has reached two semifinals at the 2022 Internationaux de Strasbourg and the Canadian Open. Last year, Maria Sakkari ousted her in the quarterfinals at the US Open. Pliskova’s best performance at Flushing Meadows came in 2016 when she finished second.
The Czech defeated Magda Linette in the first round. She followed it up with a comprehensive win in straight sets against Marie Bouzkova in round two. In the third round, Pliskova got the better of 2019 US Open semifinalist Belinda Bencic in three sets.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The duo has faced each other on 8 previous occasions. The head-to-head score stands tantalizingly at 4-4.
Prediction: Victoria Azarenka to win in three sets.
