Simona Halep and Jessica Pegula faced each other in the semifinals of the 2022 Montreal Open. Both women had their moments but eventually, the two-time Grand Slam champion got the win.
Jessica Pegula had a blistering start to the match as she won the first set convincingly. However, the former world No. 1 produced a dogged display in the next two sets to eventually come out victorious.
Halep frustrated Pegula during the last couple of sets with her impeccable defensive game. The Romanian’s resilience forced Pegula to make more unforced errors as the match went on. At one point during the match, Pegula was seen talking to herself as she seemingly said: “She is pushing, she is a pusher.”
Simona Halep, who is seeded 15th, could have won the match earlier if not for her serves which were quite poor. She committed as many as 10 double faults but in the end, that did not come back to haunt the veteran. The 30-year-old has won in Montreal on two previous occasions in 2016 and 2018.
Simona Halep will lock horns against an in-form Beatriz Haddad Maia in the final of the Montreal Open 2022. The Brazilian tennis pro managed to defeat Karolina Pliskova in the semifinal in straight sets.
This will be the first appearance for Haddad Maia in a final of a WTA Masters event. She won consecutive grass-court events in June in Nottingham and Birmingham.
Meanwhile, the semi-final win for Simona Halep will take her back into the WTA Top 10 for the first time since last August.
