Nick Kyrgios’ 9-match winning streak was ended after the Aussie suffered a defeat in a thrilling quarter-final clash against Hubert Hurkacz at the ongoing Canadian Open
Nick Kyrgios came into the match on the back of some impeccable form. However, he narrowly lost the first set to the Polish tennis pro. In the second set, it was Kyrgios’ turn to edge out Hurkacz by the thinnest of margins. It all boiled down to the decisive third set and Hurkacz brought his A-game to the fore to drop just one game during the set and triumph over his opponent 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1.
This was Kyrgios’ first loss since becoming the runner-up at Wimbledon last month. During the tiebreak in the second set, Kyrgios had great luck on his side as he won a crucial point that could have easily gone the other way. The 27-year-old returned a drop shot from Hurkacz and the ball bounced on top of the net and landed on the latter’s court. Kyrgios apologized immediately after winning the point.
After passing a tough hurdle against Nick Kyrgios with flying colors, Hubert Hurkacz will be hopeful of bagging his second singles title of the year.
Hurkacz will lock horns against the confident Casper Ruud. The Norwegian has progressed to the semi-final stage after defeating Alex Molcan, Roberto Bautista Agut, and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The two talented players met at the French Open in May in the fourth round. Ruud won the match in four sets 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
