Ons Jabeur lost 1-6, 7-5, 1-6 to Marketa Vondrousova in the second round of the Australian Open
Ons Jabeur broke down into tears after her devastating loss against Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova in the second round of the Australian Open. The second seed from Tunisia was seen crying in the corridor after leaving the court following her defeat at the Rod Laver Arena. Jabeur was one of the most fancied players to win the crown in Melbourne but it’s the unseeded Vondrousova instead who has prevailed to fight another day.
Jabeur had reached the Roland Garros and US Open finals last year and was seeking her first Grand Slam trophy. The two players were poles apart on paper with 84 ranking spots separating them and Jabeur was expected to cruise past the 23-year-old Czech. However, Vondrousova had other plans and pulled off a major upset against her much-fancied opponent.
Let us take a look at some of the reactions from fans on social media.
“While I admire jabeur, I do believe she is a distant no. 2 from no. 1 iga swiatek, lots of players at their best can beat/upset jabeur. I guess her mental game and some aspects of her game need to be improved, like her court coverage, maybe her fitness”, wrote a fan.
“Oh it makes me so sad. I really want her to win a slam so bad”, commented a disappointed fan.
“I wish they wouldn’t put cameras absolutely everywhere. Obviously she waited until she was in the tunnel because she didn’t wanna do that in public. I would be so paranoid if I had to walk around my workplace knowing anything I did anywhere might end up on the internet”, read a comment.
“Super sad. Hope she comes back strong and gets one of the remaining slams. I wish we hadn’t seen this”, commented another fan.
Another fan wrote: “Kid, you’re an awesome player. It’s ok to cry. It’s also ok to lose. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Thanks for your tennis and your talent.”
