Holger Rune faced the red-hot Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Basel Open final on Sunday. The Danish youngster was blown away in the first set but gave a better account of himself in the second set. Eventually, Felix Auger-Aliassime won the match 6-3, 7-5.
During the match, a controversial moment occurred when Holger Rune complained to the umpire about how the visuals on the back-court screens began changing in the middle of a point.
The match was intriguingly poised at 5-5 in the second set and the game was at deuce. Rune was serving and during that point, the ads changed on the board behind Auger-Aliassime. Rune ended up losing the point and went toward the umpire to point out what had distracted him. The 19-year-old was asked to carry on with the match and he managed to win the next point. However, the Canadian sensation broke the serve and held his serve in the following game to lift his fourth title of the season.
This was Auger-Aliassime’s third consecutive title in three weeks. He defeated the world No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz, in the semis and will now enter the Paris Masters brimming with confidence.
Holger Rune will be seen in action in both the singles event and the doubles event at the 2022 Paris Masters.
Rune begins his singles campaign at the Paris Masters against the 3-time Grand Slam champion Holger Rune. This will be the first meeting between the two players.
In the doubles event, Rune will team up with Stefanos Tsitsipas and take on the team of Sebastian Baez and Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Monday.
