Carlos Alcaraz lost to Jannik Sinner in an intense Round of 16 encounter at Wimbledon 2022 on Sunday
An old video of Carlos Alcaraz‘s comments has surfaced on the internet after his loss to Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon 2022. In the video – which was shot after Alcaraz’s win over Sinner in Paris 2021, the Spaniard mentioned that he looks up to Sinner for inspiration and aims to be placed high in the world rankings like the Italian, “in two years’ time”.
Interestingly, the then 35-ranked Alcaraz is presently ranked No.7 in the men’s singles ATP rankings.
Back in 2021, speaking after his win over Sinner at the ATP Masters, Alcaraz said – “He has won four or five ATP titles this year (2021), he’s 9 in the rankings, he is fighting for the ATP finals. I’m still learning, still getting experience, I’m 35 in the rankings right now, so I’m really happy for the level I’m playing right now. I hope to be in the same position as Jannik Sinner in a couple of years.”
Alcaraz has certainly achieved his objective well before time but failed to emulate his win over Sinner this time around at Wimbledon.

Back in Paris, underdog Alcaraz managed to pull off a straight-set win over the higher-ranked Sinner. This time around at Wimbledon, the roles reversed – no.5 seed Alcaraz lost to tenth seed Sinner.
The 20-year-old Sinner produced an impressive all-round display to see off 19-year-old Alcaraz, in a meeting between two players, who are seen as rising stars of the men’s game. The Italian triumphed 6-1, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the first time.
Sinner has become the youngest man to reach the last-eight of the tournament since Nick Kyrgios in 2014. Sinner had never won a grass court match until this year’s Wimbledon.But now, he goes on to face defending champion and top seed Novak Djokovic for a spot in the semi-finals.
