As things stand, the Serbian legend’s unvaccinated status will stop him from competing at Flushing Meadows this year. The qualifiers have already begun while the main draw will commence on August 29.

American tennis pro – Reilly Opelka got into a Twitter war with a popular journalist Ben Rothenberg after the latter called Djokovic “selfish” for not withdrawing from the tournament earlier.

Rothenberg isn’t too pleased with the fact that Djokovic is waiting till the last minute to see if he can get the nod to play at the US Open. The journalist feels that the 35-year-old should have pulled out of the tournament beforehand upon seeing that his chances to feature at the US Open were slim. Rothenberg put out a tweet stating his thoughts regarding the situation and Opelka gave him a strong response in support of Djokovic. Opelka supported Djokovic for giving himself the best chance of playing. He wrote:

“Why wouldn’t he give himself the best chance of playing? “Desperately clinging on” has gotten him pretty far in this business wouldn’t you say? Your personal hatred and obsession towards Novak is so unprofessional.”

The Twitter war didn’t end there as Rothenberg tried explaining his stance. However, the 24-year-old Opelka was having none of it.
