Beatriz Haddad Maia had to pull out of the 2023 Guadalajara Open due to an unfortunate incident at her hotel. The Brazilian tennis player shared the news on her social media, explaining that she suffered injuries while exiting the shower in her hotel room. She mentioned that the shower door unexpectedly swung open, causing multiple cuts on her hand, which required her to be promptly taken to the hospital for stitches.
Haddad Maia indicated that although her injuries weren’t severe, she required some time to evaluate her condition. She expressed her desire to return to the WTA Tour during the latter part of the season. Mexico held a special place in her heart, cherished by both fans and players alike.
Additionally, she shared images showing the current state of her hands. In Guadalajara, she was scheduled for a highly anticipated first-round match against Danielle Collins as the No. 9 seed, making it one of the most awaited opening-round contests in Mexico. Notably, she had participated in the WTA 1000 tournament there the previous year but faced an early exit in the first round.
2023 marked a significant milestone in Beatriz Haddad Maia’s career as she achieved her first-ever Grand Slam semifinal at Roland Garros. During her remarkable journey, the Brazilian tennis player secured victories over opponents such as Tatjana Maria, Diana Shainder, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Sara Sorribes Tormo, and Ons Jabeur.
Her win against Sorribes Tormo also carried historical significance, as it made her the first Brazilian woman to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since the legendary Maria Bueno accomplished the feat in 1968. Unfortunately, her fairy tale run came to an end when eventual champion Iga Swiatek defeated her in the semifinals.
In 2023, Beatriz Haddad Maia celebrated her first WTA 1000 doubles title by winning the Madrid Open alongside Victoria Azarenka. Their triumph came in a hard-fought final against Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. Notably, Haddad Maia’s success in 2023 has predominantly been in doubles, where she also made it to the final of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open partnering with Laura Siegemund and reached the quarterfinals at the US Open alongside Azarenka.
Apart from her impressive doubles achievements, Haddad Maia’s singles performance also had notable moments. Ranked as the World No. 18, she reached the fourth round at the Wimbledon Championships, showcasing her prowess on grass. However, her journey at the Australian Open ended in the early rounds, and she faced a similar fate at the US Open, bowing out in the second round.
