Here is everything you should know about the longest gap between two Grand Slam wins in the Open Era
Belarusian tennis star Victoria Azarenka is on the cusp of scripting history at the Australian Open. Azarenka has reached the semi-finals in Melbourne with an impressive 6-4, 6-1 victory against No.3 seed Jessica Pegula. If Azarenka wins her next two matches and clinches the title, she will be crowned a Grand Slam Champion after more than 10 years since her last Major win in 2013.
If Victoria Azarenka wins the Australian Open, it will have been 10 years (3,654 days) between her Slam women’s singles titles, by far the longest gap for any player in the Open era between major wins. However, there is still some way to go before Azarenka can create this record. Elena Rybakina stands in her way in the semi-finals and it will be a tough challenge for the 33-year-old from Belarus. If she manages to register a win against Rybakina, she will have to deal with either Magda Linette or Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
Fans react to the prospect of Victoria Azarenka possibly creating history in Melbourne
Let us take a look at some of the responses from fans on social media.
“How insane is it that Novak was fave then and he is fave now, perhaps even more so, given that he had to beat Murray and Nadal last time”, wrote a fan.
“You really think her grandma hips can endure the Rybakina serves? I’m a Vila fan but let’s be realistic”, joked another fan.
“This run is just another Sharapovaesque in Wimbledon 2015. People were cheering her 11 years anniversary post Wimbledon 2004 win. Good enough to reach semis, but that’s it”, read a tweet.
“It would be incredible to see @vika7 win the @AustralianOpen again. She is playing very well”, tweeted another fan.
Another fan wrote: “Dont jinx her Man. Go Vika.”
