Roger Federer has officially announced that he will be back on the ATP tour in October at the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament in Basel. Federer is scheduled to play his first match of the tournament on October 25 and if he wins, his next round match is scheduled for October 27. The Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel is an ATP-500 event.

The Swiss maestro has been out of action for more than a year now. Federer had to undergo two knee surgeries in 2020 after which he made a brief comeback, playing five tournaments before he had to go for a third surgery.

Federer has spent most of the last two years on the sidelines with a right knee injury. The 40-year-old ended his 2020 season after the Australian Open to undergo double knee surgery, returning in March 2021 at the ATP 250 event in Doha. Federer played just 5 tournaments before being forced out once again with an injury during his campaign at Wimbledon. Federer announced he would end his season early to have third knee surgery.

Fans react to the announcement on twitter

Fans are understandably elated with the announcement. It has been a long wait for the Federer loyalists and they can now finally watch their idol do what he does best – play tennis.

A super excited fan tweeted, “Great news. My Favourite person and player Roger Federer. Wana see you to lift few more trophies.”

While some fans are really excited, a certain section is wondering if this could mean that Roger is set to retire on home turf.

“Should I be happy or not? Because this might mean…Anyway I am still gonna remain positive and hope for a successful comeback”, tweeted one such fan.

“This is GREAT Roger! but Iโ€™m keeping my fingers and everything crossed for one more return to the Temple of Tennis, @Wimbledon !!!”, tweeted another fan.

“Oh boy Roger… Are you saying something without saying it ? If so, man my heart will break in a thousand pieces…”, tweeted another fan who wonders if this means the end is very near.
