In tennis, a bagel is when the set ends with a score of 6–0. An extremely rare type of bagel, where no point is lost, is called a golden set. Most bagel sets occur in the early rounds of tennis tournaments where the favorites play lower-ranked players such as a lucky loser or a wild card. Let us take a look at which players have scored the most bagels in the open era!
Andre Agassi leads this pack of legends with 50 bagels in his career. Roger Federer (46), Rafael Nadal (44), Jimmy Connors (44), Ivan Lendl (42), Novak Djokovic (42) are the top names in this list. Only Nadal and Djokovic add to their tally since the rest of the players have already retired.
Scoring a bagel in a Grand Slam is way tougher than a normal tour match, obviously because of the difference in competition level. No wonder, this list comprises legendary names from the Tennis world.
Who holds the record of scoring most bagels among active players?
After Federer’s retirement last week, Novak Djokovic is the closest challenger to Rafael Nadal – who, with 113 bagels holds the record of scoring most bagels among active players. Djokovic (98) is second on the list while Andy Murray (70) is quite a long way behind. Spain’s Fernando Verdasco (46) and Frenchman Richard Gasquet (43) complete the top five.
While Rafael Nadal leads the pack of active players, the Spaniard still is well behind Jimmy Connors’ all-time record of 198 bagels. Several other legends from the past have also amassed more bagels in their careers than Rafael Nadal. Those include Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Guillermo Vilas, Ilie Nastase, Manuel Orantes and Andre Agassi. However, Nadal could very well surpass Agassi’s tally of 116 by the time he retires.
