China’s Yibing Wu scripted history by winning the ATP Dallas Open earlier today

Yibing Wu has scripted a historic win at the Dallas Open, defeating fifth seed John Isner in the final. Earlier this week, Wu became the first Chinese player to reach an ATP final in the Open Era and now he has become the first Chinese player to win an ATP title. The 23-year-old survived four championship points to defeat Isner 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 in the summit clash.

Wu’s journey at the recently concluded Dallas Open is no less than a fairytale. The Chinese player came into the tournament as an underdog but made his intentions clear from the very first round. After defeating Michael Mmoh in Round I, Wu got the big scalp of No. 3 seed Denis Shapovalov in the next round. He then got the better of eighth seed Adrian Mannarino before causing a major upset over top seed Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals. Wu played like he had nothing to lose in the final against Isner and held his nerves till the end to script a historic win.

Yibing Wu has now achieved career-best ranking of No. 58

Wu’s incredible run at the Dallas Open will go down as of the most epic underdog stories in recent times. The Chinese player was ranked World No. 1121 last year and now he has climbed up the rankings to No. 58. Wu is understandably elated by this victory and stated: “I made history here for my country and for my home. I’m very proud of myself and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support. I couldn’t do this without any of you guys.”

Wu made his debut on the ATP tour in 2017 at the Chengdu Open. Some of his notable achievements during his brief career till date include his Grand Slam debut at the 2022 US Open, becoming the first male Chinese in the Open Era to qualify at the US Open. However, nothing comes close to his historic title win at Dallas and he certainly looks destined for bigger and better things.
