Iga Swiatek’s winning streak of 33 matches has put her on the verge of breaking multiple records
Iga Swiatek has been on a dream run in 2022. With her 33rd straight win, the world No. 1 has moved within two wins of the longest streak of wins (35) held by Venus Williams. Serena Williams is second on the list with 34 wins.
Since a run to the Australian Open semi-finals in January, Swiatek has completely dominated the women’s game and won her past five tournaments – Qatar Open, Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open and the Rome Masters. The Polish star is in red hot form and the current World No.1. The top seed certainly looks like breaking this record at the Roland Garros.
Iga Swiatek has been invincible so far in 2022. The Polish star became the World No.1 in women’s singles after winning both the events of the Sunshine Double – the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open 2022. Prior to that, she won the Qatar Open in Doha.
The 20-year old became the youngest woman to win the Indian Wells and the Miami Open in the same season. Having won in Doha in February, Swiatek became the first player ever to sweep the first three WTA 1000 events in a season.
Can Iga Swiatek break yet another record this year?
Iga Swiatek will now face No.20 seed Daria Kasatkina in the semi-finals in Paris. Swiatek and Kasatkina have faced each other four times before on the WTA tour. The Polish star has a healthy lead of 3-1 on head to head. Their last meeting came earlier this year in Doha, which Swiatek won 6-3, 6-0. If Swiatek gets past Kasatkina, she will be joint 2nd in the list with 34 wins along with Serena Williams.
Swiatek could face either Coco Gauff or Martina Trevisan in the final. Being the superior seed by far, among all the remaining players in the draw – it is very likely that Swiatek will sit on top of the list with 35 wins, along with Venus Williams at the end of this tournament.
