Fans are brutally trolling Sorana Cirstea for her sexist views – here’s everything you need to know
Romanian tennis star Sorana Cirstea is facing severe backlash after uploading an Instagram story that has led some fans to accuse her of sexism and transphobia. Cirstea is set to play her first round match at Wimbledon on July 5 and she definitely didn’t need this controversy going into the encounter. Cirstea has made controversial statements regarding gender-related issues in the past as well and the repeat offense has led fans to believe that she has ‘outdated views’.
Cirstea story read: “Make men masculine again. Make women feminine again. Make children innocent again.” The story implies that traditional concepts of masculinity and femininity should be restored, and any other gender identities, such as non-binary or gender fluid should be ignored. It went viral in no time and several fans took to social media to express their anger and disappointment at Cirstea’s decision to share the post.
Let us take a look at some of the reactions of angered fans.
Sorana Cirstea defended Ilie Nastase’s sexist comments in the past
This is not the first time that Sorana Cirstea has been involved in a controversy surrounding gender bias and sexism. In 2017, Romanian Fed Cup team captain Ilie Nastase made a series of sexist and racially insensitive comments directed towards British player Johanna Konta and the team’s captain, Anne Keothavong.
He made inappropriate comments about Konta’s nationality, referring to her as a “f*****g b***h” and asking the umpire for her room number. Additionally, Nastase reportedly made racist remarks towards Keothavong, who is of Asian descent.
These comments sparked outrage and condemnation from the tennis community and the public. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) launched an investigation into the incident, and Nastase was subsequently suspended from all ITF events, including the Fed Cup, until December 2018. He was also fined by the ITF for his behavior.
Nastase’s comments were widely criticized for their sexism, racism, and overall disrespect towards women in the sport. However, Cirstea came out and defended Nastase on this issue which clearly gives us an idea about her sexist nature.
