Let us take a look at the favourites in the men’s singles category of Wimbledon 2022

Wimbledon 2022 is set to begin later this month on June 27 and continue till July 10. The tournament has been under a cloud of controversy for the past few months but that doesn’t take anything away from this iconic event – the oldest tennis tournament in the world.

A number of top players in the men’s singles category are set to miss the tournament due to injury while the participation of some players are still in doubt. Keeping aside all the misses and speculations, let us take a look at the top 5 favourites in the tournament.

5. Stefanos Tsitsipas

Talking of the top 5 favourites, one can certainly not rule out Tsitsipas. The Greek ace successfully defended his Monte-Carlo Masters title, earlier this year against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in two sets, 6-3, 7-6, to capture his second ATP Masters 1000 title. Tsitsipas is presently ranked World No.6.

A point worth noting is that, the Greek doesn’t boast that good a record in Grass. He will be looking forward to rewriting that narrative, this time around.

4. Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz is presently ranked World No.7 on the ATP tour. The Spanish teenager has had a stellar 2022 so far. Earlier this year, he won his first ATP 500 title – the Rio Open and then went on to clinch his first masters title – the Miami Open. Alcaraz is in sublime touch this season and in the absence of top players like Alexander Zverev and Roger Federer, he certainly is one of the early favourites to clinch the crown at Wimbledon.

3. Matteo Berrettini

One just can’t leave out Berrettini from the favourites list when it comes to grass courts. ‘The Hammer’ who finished runner-up at last year’s Wimbledon, will be looking forward to going all the way this time.

2. Rafael Nadal (if fit to play)

Nadal’s participation in this edition of Wimbledon is in doubt after he suffered a foot injury while playing the final at Roland Garros. The 22-time champion is striving hard to be fit in time for the Wimbledon and would certainly be one of the favourites, if he manages to pull through.

Nadal has had a dream run so far in 2022. He has been quite close to invincible and has clinched a historic 22nd Grand Slam and a record 14th Roland Garros title this year. If Nadal is fit in time to play on the grassy lawns of Wimbledon, he is very likely to go all the way and win it.

Novak Djokovic

Djokovic will be coming into the tournament hungry to win and with a point to prove. The Serbian has had an underwhelming year so far due to multiple reasons and he would be desperate to turn things around. The World No.1 has won the Wimbledon six times in the past and is also the defending champion. In the absence of the likes of Federer, Zverev, Medvedev and if Nadal eventually fails to make the cut, Djokovic will be way clear of the field both in terms of experience and potential. All these factors certainly make Novak Djokovic the favourite to clinch Wimbledon 2022.
