The preliminary qualifying rounds of Wimbledon 2022 are already underway from June 20
Wimbledon 2022 is scheduled to begin later this month on 27th June and continue till 10th July. The tournament is presently wrapped in a blanket of controversy – with multiple top stars from Russia and Belarus missing out from the tournament.
The All England Club has banned Russian and Belarusian players from participating in the tournament and as a result, the ATP and the WTA have stripped the historic event of ranking points.
Amidst all the controversies, the Wimbledon qualifiers got underway today in a bid to determine who will make it to the main draw to rub shoulders against the top players who have already qualified based on their superior rankings.
This year players will compete for a share of £40 million (£40,350,000) in prize money, an increase of 15.23% compared to the £35 million total prize money in 2021. It is also 6.23% more than in 2019, the year the championships last had full-capacity crowds.
As for specific player remuneration, the 2022 Wimbledon champion will take home a cheque for £2,000,000, up 17.65% compared to what Novak Djokovic received twelve months ago. The runner-up will bag themselves just over half that amount with £1,050,000, a similar increase of 16.67% vs 2021.
With the qualifying phase already under way, here’s what’s at stake for the qualifiers –
2022 | Prize Money £ GBP | Prize Money $ USD | Prize Money € EUR | % Change vs 2021 |
Q3 | £32,000 | $40,119 | €37,652 | 25.49% |
Q2 | £19,000 | $23,821 | €22,356 | 22.58% |
Q1 | £11,000 | $13,791 | €12,943 | 29.41% |
