Wimbledon organizers have always been very strict when it comes to the rule regarding the dress codes of players during a match – especially underwear
According to rules on the tournament’s official website: “Any undergarments that either are or can be visible during play (including due to perspiration) must also be completely white except for a single trim of color no wider than one centimeter (10mm).”
Now, the All England Club seems to be set to relax the strict rule on all-white underwear after problems about the anxiety faced by the female players during their menstrual cycles were taken into account.
The organizers have also addressed the situation as a problem that needs to be solved. It is highly likely that a new rule will be implied from next year’s tournament where the all-white rule will be applicable only to the top layer of clothing.
In a statement, the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (AELTC) said “Prioritising women’s health and supporting players based on their individual needs is very important to us, and we are in discussions with the WTA, with manufacturers and with the medical teams about the ways in which we can do that.”
A group of people protested outside the gates of Wimbledon this year, and they used the slogan “Address the dress code”.
They arrived before the women’s final between Ons Jabeur and Elena Rybakina. Recreational tennis player Gabriella Holmes and footballer Holly Gordon said they organized the campaign, Address The Dress Code, to bring to the fore the anxiety faced by women competitors when they are forced to wear only white-colored undergarments.
Holmes, Gordon, and the other protestors will certainly be pleased as their demands have not fallen on deaf ears. Many people on social media had also joined the protests and it’s going to be a big win for everyone involved.
