Gaby Dabrowski shared her thoughts about the upcoming 2020 US Open on her Twitter handle
Canadian tennis star Gaby Dabrowski expressed her concerns regarding the 2020 US Open on Wednesday.
The World No.7 in doubles, according to the WTA rankings, shared her personal thoughts on the upcoming 2020 US Open, which will kick off from August 24 until September 13, via her official Twitter handle.
Dabrowski posted a long list of concerns regarding the US Open’s decision to host the event in New York amidst the pandemic coronavirus crisis with the caption, “My personal thoughts on the @usopen moving forward:”
The Canadian was especially upset over the decision to cut short the number of participants in the tournament. Qualifiers seem to be out of the question while the doubles side of the draw has been reduced.
However, she had also mentioned that she was appreciative of the US Open officials’ efforts to conduct the Grand Slam event amidst all the turmoil.
Mike Dowse, chief executive officer executive director of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) had earlier posted their plan to conduct the 2020 US Open had met its approval. However, they also added that they would be making an official announcement soon.
Dabrowski’s concerns on the 2020 US Open received a lot of backing from her fellow players in the WTA. American tennis star and current World No.19 Alison Riske-Amritraj replied to Dabrowski’s tweet saying, “We are lucky to have you”.
Another American tennis player, CoCo Vandeweghe, meanwhile lauded Dabrowski’s efforts commenting that she always spoke on the player’s behalf. The 28-year-old’s response read: “Very well said. At the players expense always”
Dabrowski also found a supporter in Slovakian star Zuzana Zlochova. Zlochova was of the opinion that it was not going to be like a normal Grand Slam, especially with the health concerns playing a big part.
She replied, “Exactly what I feel! So frustrating to see this happening. It’s not going to be normal slam and health concerns are a BIG part! And imagine one person tests positive, other players(people) would have to isolate too? Its just not right!”
Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios had called the United States Tennis Association selfish for pressing ahead with the decision to conduct the US Open.
With the US still battling with the virus and the streets of its cities filled with protests after the death of George Floyd, Krygios felt that no event should be organised during such a time.
