A passionate music lover, Nézet-Seguin, however, revealed his passion for tennis by making a subtle and original musical comparison between two tennis greats Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal.

“I notice that, very often, my musician friends love Federer, his elegance, his fluidity, his refinement. I understand it because he represents this ideal of transcended work when everything becomes so natural that it seems like it’s always easy,” he said in an interview published by L’Equipe.

However, he declared that he was a big fan of Nadal and explained why he loved the Spaniard.

“But what I like most about music is passion and that is why I tend to identify with Nadal … His way of fighting for absolutely everyone. The points resonate with my consideration that absolutely every note is important,” Nézet-Seguin explained.

The 45-year-old Nézet-Seguin is currently the music director of the Orchestre Métropolitain (Montréal), the Metropolitan Opera, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

“Nadal is very Beethoven, actually”

Nézet-Seguin could not stop but heap praise upon his favourite tennis player Nadal, who is the winner of 19 Grand Slam titles.

The Canadian revealed that what he liked the most about Nadal was that he found the Spaniard very inspiring as a human being who controlled his destiny, especially from a musical point of view.

“Almost unhealthily, or certainly unconsciously, he often put himself in a losing position before winning, especially early in his career. As a musician, I find this story of the human being who controls his destiny very inspiring. Nadal is very Beethoven, actually,” Nézet-Seguin said.

He also explained why most of his colleagues liked Federer. According to him when it comes to the Swiss, they attach a lot of musical value, especially upon relaxation, and the absence of tension for a good sound.
