Daniil Medvedev is the current World No. 1 ranked player in the world in the ATP rankings. He won the US Open men’s singles event in 2021 and will be looking forward to repeating the heroics this year as well.
Recently an old video surfaced on the Internet where Daniil Medvedev spoke about his ambitions for the year 2016 and beyond. The video which was shot in 2016 features an interview with the Russian and he laid down his goals and said that becoming the world’s No. 1 ranked player will be the most unbelievable thing in his life. However, he would not be sad if he breaks into the top 10.
Six years later, it turns out that the most unbelievable thing in his life has come to reality. On the back of excellent and consistent performances, Medvedev has managed to claim the No. 1 spot in the rankings.
Medvedev almost won back-to-back Grand Slam titles when he almost defeated Rafael Nadal in the 2022 Australian Open final. However, the veteran held his nerves and came out victorious. Medvedev’s French Open campaign was a debacle this year. He was ousted in the fourth round by Marin Cilic in a one-sided contest.
Russian and Belarusian players were banned from participating at Wimbledon this year. So, Medvedev missed out on the grass-court major. Now, he has his sights set on defending the US Open title.
Daniil Medvedev to open his Los Cabos Open campaign against Rinky Hijikata
The 26-year-old Daniil Medvedev has failed to win a title in 2022 as of now. He made it to two finals out of the last three tournaments he has played. Tim van Rijthoven stunned Medvedev in the finals of the Libema Open while Hobert Hurcasz got the better of the Russian at the Halle Open.
Medvedev will want to end the title drought ahead of the US Open as he gears up for the Los Cabos competition. He will be up against Rinky Hijikata in the Round of 16.
Medvedev will walk into the match as the overwhelming favorite. His opponent is currently ranked 224 and turned pro last year. The two players will be facing each other for the first time.
