Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro retired from professional Tennis in 2022
Juan Martin del Potro is a legend in his own right and undoubtedly the greatest player from Argentina. In an illustrious career spanning over 17 years, the Argentine star won 22 titles in Singles including a US Open Grand Slam title in 2009. Del Potro was ranked as high as World No. 3 in singles during his playing career. He announced his retirement from professional Tennis in 2022.
Del Potro is the only man outside the Big Three (Novak Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal) to win a major between the 2005 French Open and the 2012 US Open, a span of 30 tournaments – a commendable feat. Some of the biggest highlights of his career include – Bronze and Silver medals at the Olympics, winning the ATP 1000 Indian Wells Masters title, leading Argentina to a Davis Cup win besides winning the US Open in 2009. Del Potro’s career was unfortunately marred by injuries which forced him out of action for months and it ultimately led to his retirement in 2022.
Despite a successful career filled with silverware, del Potro was never able to take the No.1 spot in men’s singles in the ATP Rankings. He played in an era when the sport was dominated by three legendary players in Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic – Del Potro believes that’s the primary reason why he could never fulfill his dream of becoming No.1. The Argentine could only climb as high as No.3 in the rankings, a spot he occupied only for a few weeks.
In a recent interview in Sao Paulo, del Potro reflected back on his career and stated: “The only thing I lacked was being No. 1.” He further explained: “It was always a dream and I always worked for it but I was proud of my career and I never made it because there was either Federer, or Nadal or Djokovic.” Del Potro is currently attending a Roland Garros Junior series event in Brazil.
