Ashleigh Barty retired from professional Tennis in early 2022 – here’s how the post-Ashleigh Barty era looks in women’s Tennis
Former World No. 1 Ash Barty announced her retirement from professional tennis in March, 2022, at the age of 25. She was absolutely dominating world Tennis during that phase and her sudden retirement was quite surprising for the whole Tennis fraternity. The WTA tour was looking for a new superstar to step up and as things would turn out we now have 3 of them.
Since Barty’s retirement the trio of Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina have won 10 out of a possible 16 big titles so far. To be fair, Swiatek appears to be ahead of the rest of the pack though and the Polish star has had a sublime couple of years. Rybakina and Sabalenka have been really good in patches but haven’t quite been as consistent as Swiatek.
Swiatek was invincible in 2022 and she has replicated her form even this year. We are just halfway into the season and Swiatek has already won three WTA titles this year – the Qatar Open, the Stuttgart Open and the French Open besides reaching the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters and finishing as runners-up at the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Madrid Open. That is utter dominance and there’s no stopping her at the moment!
Ashleigh Barty retired from Tennis in March, 2022 at the young age of 25. She revealed her decision of retiring in a recorded video last year where she was having a conversation with former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua. The announcement came across as a huge shock to the tennis community especially since Barty was in her peak and was the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open Champion.
Ashleigh Barty retired from professional Tennis ‘ to chase other dreams’. She explained that she was ‘absolutely spent both physically and mentally’ and had nothing more to offer to the sport. She believed that winning the 2021 Wimbledon title was the peak point of her career. She had considered retiring from the sport on a high after winning the title but instead opted to take the Australian Open Challenge on home turf and retired after winning the Grand Slam Down Under.
