Wolverhampton’s Henry Searle has been in the limelight over the past few days following his sublime showing at the boys Singles’ event of Wimbledon 2023. The 17-year-old has stormed into the quarter-finals of the tournament after registering a comprehensive 6-4, 6-2 victory against France’s Arthur Gea.
Searle defeated Bolivian top seed Juan Carlos Prado Angelo in straight sets in the first round and followed it up with a victory against India’s Manas Dhamne in the second round. Searle will now have his eyes set on clinching this historic title and join an illustrious list of Tennis superstars.
The Wimbledon boys Singles’ title has an illustrious list of winners over the years. Here are the top five most famous stars who have bagged this prestigious crown in the past.
Björn Borg (1972): Borg, a Swedish tennis legend, won the boys’ singles title in 1972. He went on to achieve incredible success in his professional career, winning 11 Grand Slam titles, including five consecutive Wimbledon titles from 1976 to 1980.
Pat Cash (1982): Cash, an Australian tennis player, won the boys’ singles title in 1982. He is best known for his victory at the Wimbledon Championships in 1987, where he famously climbed into the stands to celebrate with his family and coach after defeating Ivan Lendl in the final.
Stefan Edberg (1983): Edberg, another Swedish tennis great, won the boys’ singles title in 1983. He later became one of the most successful players of his era, winning six Grand Slam singles titles, including two Wimbledon championships in 1988 and 1990.
Alexander Zverev (2014): Zverev, a German tennis player, won the boys’ singles title in 2014. He has since become one of the top players in the world, winning multiple Masters 1000 titles and reaching the finals of the 2020 US Open.
