Mary Carillo referred to Taylor Fritz as “Taylor Swift” on air and the clip has gone viral on social media – here’s everything you need to know
Mary Carillo, an ex-professional tennis player from the United States, has transitioned into a prominent career as a sportscaster.
At present, she serves as an analyst for Tennis on NBC and as a reporter for NBC’s Olympic broadcasts. Carillo participated in the women’s professional tennis circuit from 1977 to 1980, achieving her highest world ranking of No. 33 in the Women’s Tennis Association Rankings during the period of January to March 1980. Her retirement was prompted by knee injuries, and while she didn’t secure a major singles title, she did clinch the 1977 French Open mixed-doubles championship alongside John McEnroe.
Mary Carillo embarked on her television career with various networks, including USA Network (1980-1987), PBS (1981-1986), and MSG (1981-1988). She then transitioned to ESPN, where she worked from 1988 to 1997 and returned for another stint from 2003 to 2010. Additionally, Carillo contributed to CBS Sports’ US Open coverage from 1986 to 2014. Her involvement in tennis broadcasting extended to HBO, where she served as both a host and analyst for Wimbledon coverage from 1996 to 1999 and Turner Sports’ Wimbledon coverage from 2000 to 2002.
In May 2003, Mary Carillo joined NBC Sports as an analyst for their French Open and Wimbledon coverage, marking her debut as an analyst on NBC during the 1996 Family Circle Cup tennis event. She also provided commentary for The Tennis Channel.
During the Fritz and Djokovic match at Flushing Meadows, there was an amusing moment when former tennis player turned commentator Mary Carillo accidentally called Fritz “Taylor Swift.” This mix-up between Taylor Fritz and the famous American popstar Taylor Swift brought a lot of laughter among tennis enthusiasts. Some fans even humorously suggested that Taylor Swift might have given Novak Djokovic a tougher competition than the actual World No. 9 did during the 2023 US Open quarterfinal.
By reaching his 47th Grand Slam semifinal, Djokovic surpassed Roger Federer on the list of all-time Grand Slam semifinal appearances. Djokovic achieved this milestone after defeating Fritz with a score of 6-1, 6-4, 6-4. Notably, he extended his remarkable winning streak against American opponents to 30 consecutive victories. Furthermore, this victory marked Djokovic’s eighth win over the World No. 9, as he has emerged victorious in each of their previous tour-level matchups.
