Here’s everything you need to know about Tommy Paul’s cute superfan
Tommy Paul’s most successful US Open campaign has been significantly influenced by a fortunate charm – a young devoted fan named Eddie, hailing from Brooklyn. Eddie has been prominently present for Tommy Paul’s recent two victories in New York.
Their initial encounter occurred during a packed and lively match on Court 17, where Paul secured a thrilling five-set, three-hour victory against Wimbledon quarterfinalist Roman Safiullin in the second round. Following Paul’s remarkable comeback from a two-sets-to-love deficit, the 14th-seeded player approached Eddie and generously presented him with one of his signature red New Balance shirts.
Eddie returned to his courtside spot on Friday, enthusiastically cheering on Tommy Paul during his Round 3 match inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. In a thrilling four-set victory over the 21st-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Paul secured his spot in the Round 4 of the tournament, marking a significant achievement for him in New York.
After the match’s conclusion, Paul rushed over to Eddie, gifting him another shirt and sharing a warm hug. This marked Eddie’s debut appearance in Arthur Ashe Stadium, and he continued to passionately support his beloved player, with his presence and vocal support being evident throughout the match.
Tommy Paul lost to Ben Shelton in the fourth round
Ben Shelton achieved a satisfying victory on Sunday at the US Open by defeating his fellow countryman, Tommy Paul. This win earned him the distinction of becoming the youngest American male player to reach the quarter-finals in New York in over two decades.
Notably, Shelton had previously faced a loss to Paul in the Australian Open quarter-finals earlier in the year. However, he managed to avoid a repeat of history at the season’s final major. Despite a momentary setback where he lost a 4-1 lead in the third set, the left-handed player ultimately prevailed with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
With his impressive two-hour and fifty-minute victory, Ben Shelton has now become the youngest American to reach the quarter-finals since a 20-year-old Andy Roddick achieved the same feat back in 2002. Notably, Andy Roddick, who won the championship in 2003, was eliminated in the quarter-finals that year.
However, Shelton has his sights set on advancing even further and potentially reaching his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final. He’s set to face either Frances Tiafoe or Rinky Hijikata in the upcoming match scheduled for Tuesday.
On the other hand, Tommy Paul reached the fourth round in New York for the first time, a significant achievement for him. He notably came back from a two-set deficit for the first time in his career to defeat Roman Safiullin in the second round. Despite his strong performance, he currently holds the 12th position in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings, but this may change if Frances Tiafoe, a 25-year-old player, secures a victory on Sunday.
