Carlos Alcaraz lost the final of the Rio Open to Cameron Norrie earlier this week – why did he pull out of the Acapulco Mexican Open?

Carlos Alcaraz has announced his withdrawal from the ATP 500 Acapulco Open. The Spaniard aggravated his injury on the right leg during his run to the final at the Rio Open. Earlier this week, Alcaraz finished runners-up in Rio, losing the final to Cameron Norrie 7-5, 4-6, 5-7. Meanwhile, Norrie has also withdrawn from the Acapulco Open because of fatigue.

Alcaraz announced his decision on Twitter. In his official statement, the Spaniard wrote: “Unfortunately I won’t be able to play in @AbiertoTelcel. I have a grade 1 strain in my right hamstring that will keep me out for several days, according to the tests we did this morning.” He further added: “I’m really sad I can’t compete here, but now it’s time to think about recovering and being ready as soon as possible. I hope to see you all soon!” Alcaraz was scheduled to face Mackenzie McDonald in the first round of the Mexican Open but he will now be replaced in the draw.

Carlos Alcaraz made a comeback on the ATP tour in February

Carlos Alcaraz made a comeback on the ATP tour last month at the Argentina Open. The Spaniard was on a long injury lay-off spanning over three months but he had been in sublime touch ever since he took the court in Argentina. He clinched the title in Argentina and finished runners-up in Rio and looked all set to do well in Mexico. However, the same leg injury that had kept him away from the action for three months has aggravated and he is set to be out of action once again.

Alcaraz will now undergo tests to ascertain the extent of the injury. He has attributed his injuries to the demands of the hectic Tennis calendar. It remains to be seen how long it takes Alcaraz to recover and return to action.
