Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the US Open – here’s everything you need to know
Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the 2023 US Open, organizers have confirmed. This year, the 28-year-old tennis player has been hampered by injuries, taking part in only one ATP Tour match.
Despite being a finalist at Wimbledon in 2022 and making it to the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows last year, Kyrgios missed the Australian Open due to a knee injury that required surgery. Although he tried to make a comeback in June by competing in Stuttgart, he lost to China’s Wu Yibing. Unfortunately, a wrist injury led him to withdraw just before Wimbledon, and now he will also be absent from the upcoming grand slam event in New York, starting on August 28th. His current world ranking is 92.
This marks a disappointing conclusion to Kyrgios’ year, which he had hoped would solidify the success he achieved in 2022. During that year, he made an impressive breakthrough by reaching the Wimbledon final and even claiming a set from Novak Djokovic in the championship match.
However, it seems that this year hasn’t gone as planned for him. He’s on track to finish the year with just one competitive match played, resulting in a straight-sets loss on a grass court in Stuttgart back in June. Initially hindered by a knee injury, he’s now facing a torn wrist ligament that led to his withdrawal from Wimbledon and is still hindering his recovery. In a statement, Kyrgios expressed his disappointment about missing the US Open but remained determined to make a comeback.
As a result of these setbacks, his ranking is expected to drop beyond the top 100, and he will technically be unranked entering the Australian summer season. However, he does have the option of relying on his protected ranking and wildcards to aid his return, provided he chooses to skip the remainder of this season for the sake of recuperation.
Nick Kyrgios has historically done very well at the US Open
Nick Kyrgios will certainly be gutted on missing the US Open – a tournament where he has historically done well. Kyrgios’ most remarkable showing at the US Open was in 2014, where he made his debut in the main draw. As an unseeded player, he managed to reach the third round, defeating Mikhail Youzhny along the way.
His powerful serve and flair for the dramatics on the court drew the crowds and media attention alike. In subsequent years, Kyrgios continued to display flashes of brilliance and controversy.
In the 2016 US Open, he progressed to the third round, defeating the likes of Aljaz Bedene and Horacio Zeballos before falling to Illya Marchenko. His audacious shot-making and emotional outbursts further cemented his status as one of the tournament’s compelling figures. However, Kyrgios’ journey in the US Open has not been without its struggles. Injuries and inconsistency have at times hampered his progress, preventing him from consistently reaching the later stages of the tournament. His unique blend of powerful serves, flashy shots, and outspoken personality have made him a polarizing figure in the tennis world.
