4th seed Anna Kalinskaya faces Russian tennis pro – Ekaterina Makarova in the first round of the 2023 Thailand Open on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old did not have a great campaign in the Adelaide International 1. She lost to eventual finalist Linda Noskova in the first round of qualifying. In the Adelaide International 2, Kalinskaya made it to the main draw with wins against Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Alison Riske-Amritraj. In the first round, she defeated former Grand Slam champion Jelena Ostapenko. Her campaign ended with a loss to Belinda Bencic in the round of 16.
In the Australian Open, Kalinskaya faced 13th seed Danielle Collins in the first round. The Russian youngster fought well but eventually lost to the experienced American athlete in three sets 5-7, 7-5, 4-6.
The 26-year-old Russian player made her Grand Slam debut earlier this month at the Australian Open. She lost in the first round of qualifying against Kayla Day. 12 double faults did not help Makarova’s cause.
Makarova went on to play in an ITF event in India. She made it to the semis where she lost to Anastasia Tikhonova. In another ITF event in the Asian country, Makarova was ousted in the first round by Eri Shimizu. So far in the Thailand Open, Makarova got the better of Aunchisa Chanta and Miyu Kato to make it to the main draw.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as the two players have never met each other as yet.
Prediction: Anna Kalinskaya to win in straight sets.
