Experienced players Lin Zhu and Jang Su-jeong collide in the round of 16 of the 2023 Thailand Open on Wednesday.
The Chinese star has been in good form this season. She started with a run to the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic where she lost to eventual champion Coco Gauff. The Hobart International campaign wasn’t a memorable affair for Zhu as she was ousted in the first round by Sofia Kenin.
The 29-year-old bounced back at the Australian Open and made it to the fourth round of a major for the first time in her career. She defeated seeded players like Jil Teichmann and Maria Sakkari during the campaign. In the round of 32 of the Thailand Open, Zhu got the better of third seed Xiyu Wang after dropping the first set. The match ended 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
The 27-year-old crashed out in the first round of an ITF event in Australia at the start of the season. She played in the Australian Open qualifying. In the first round of qualifying, Su-jeong defeated Sara Errani. Her run ended in the second round of qualifying as she lost to Yuriko Miyazaki.
In the first round, the South Korean registered a fine win against the talented Katie Boulter in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Jang Su-jeong has a slender 3-2 lead over Lin Zhu in the head-to-head scoreline. It was the latter who won their most recent encounter in the 2022 Korea Open in straight sets.
Prediction: Lin Zhu to win in straight sets.
