The 5 Best Plays in NFL History

Published by

There’s something about watching sports, be it F1, football or basketball, that makes people go crazy about them and the NFL is no different. The NFL is the most popular sport in the United States and generates plenty of opinion.

Fans always have their favourite teams and players, and watching them execute intricate plays is just as exciting as playing a thrilling live table game at . We have witnessed many fantastic plays in NFL history and that makes it difficult to select the best, but we have picked what we believe to be the cream of the crop below. Do you agree with our selection?

Malcolm Butler at Super Bowl XLIX 2014

We begin with the most recent play in this list and Malcolm Butler produced something special at Superbowl XLIX. The New England Patriots were up against Seattle Seahawks, with the latter trailing by 4 points and the clock ticking under 30 seconds. Russell Wilson looked for a pass instead of running from the 1-yard line, but Butter had other ideas.

The rookie jumped in-front of Ricardo Lockette to make a stunning interception and seal the victory for the Patriots. The pressure of the situation and the read of the pass is what makes this such a special play.

The Music City Miracle 2000

For our next top play, we switch to an AFC wild-card game in 2000 between Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills. With just 16 seconds left on the clock, Bills kicker Steve Christie struck a 41-yard field goal to hand the Bills a 1-point advantage. From the kick-off, the ball found its way into the hands of Titan’s tight end Frank Wycheck via fullback Lorenzo Neal.

As the Bills chased Wycheck, wide receiver Kevin Dyson found some space and received the ball from Wycheck, before sprinting 75 yards for a game winning touchdown. The length of the run, in chaotic circumstances, is what makes this one of the best plays in NFL history.

David Tyree’s Helmet Catch 2008

With 2:42 to go in Super Bowl XLII, New England Patriots held a 4-point lead over New York Giants thanks to a Randy Moss touchdown. The Giants were on their own 44-yard line with the clock ticking and the play started with quarterback Eli Manning, who let loose a jump ball having escaped pressure from Richard Seymour and Jarvis Green.

David Tyree leapt to catch the ball with safety Rodney Harrison and somehow managed to pin it against his own helmet with one hand to make a 32-yard gain. This was a key moment in the downfall of the Patriots and almost defies the laws of physics, making it an awesome play.

Dwight Clark “The Catch” 1982

We move to the 1980’s for the next play and this makes the list because it is simply an astounding catch. There is no better way to explain the moment Joe Montana found Dwight Clark with a high pass in the back of the end zone.

This was an NFC Championship game between San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys and the play was crucial because it tied the score and the 49ers went on to win, reaching their first Superbowl.

What is interesting about this play is the fact the ball was going to be thrown to receiver Freddie Solomon, but he slipped, and Montana was forced to make a quick decision, providing one of the best plays in NFL history.

The Immaculate Reception 1972

Back to the early 1970s for our fifth and final play which came in the AFC Divisional Playoff game between the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers. John “Frenchy” Fuqua took a big hit from Raider’s safety Jack Tatum as he attempted to catch a pass from Terry Bradshaw.

The ball jumped away from the pair and the deflection was caught by Franco Harris in mid-air while sprinting. Harris did not break stride as he reached the end zone, completing one of the most remarkable interceptions and plays in NFL history.
