Match Report: Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Bournemouth registered their first ever victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, as Nathan Ake’s 91st-minute header helped the Cherries claim all three points over Mauricio Pochettino’s side with a 1-0 victory at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

Eddie Howe’s side overcame a 9-men Tottenham Hotspur at home in a game that looked easy on the eye in the opening stages but gradually became heated up with controversies as time wore on.

Heung-min Son received the marching orders from referee Craig Pawson just at the stroke of halftime for his retaliation on Jefferson Lerma, while Juan Foyth, who was introduced at the restart after the interval in place of Toby Alderweireld, got sent off for a high challenge on Jack Simpson.

As a matter of fact, there were plenty of talking points in the first half involving both the teams. Prior to Son’s red card incident, Eric Dier was lucky to escape a second yellow for a late challenge on Josh King in an attempt to break up a Bournemouth counter-attack.

The Bournemouth fans might feel that their team should have had a couple of penalties in the first half. Hugo Lloris rushed off his line to block Josh King’s effort, which was deemed fair by the referee, though replays revealed that the goalkeeper completely took King out on his follow through.

If that wasn’t blatant enough, Dier’s challenge on Callum Wilson inside the box certainly was, as the Spurs man just went through the striker and cut him into half in his attempt to win the ball. On another day, it could have been a second yellow for Dier and a penalty for Bournemouth.

Barring those controversial moments, the first-half belonged largely to Tottenham, with the visitors dictating the play and creating plenty of chances. As it has been the case so often this season, the Cherries looked far too exposed at the back and 19-year-old goalkeeper Mark Travers, who was making his first-team debut for the club, was called into action on numerous occasions.

Travers, who was handed a start ahead of Artur Boruc, dived to his right to keep Dele Alli’s shot out before denying Lucas Moura twice from close range. The youngster was called into action again by Alli, who met Danny Rose’s cross with his head, but the Bournemouth stopper once again came to his team’s rescue with a fine reflex save. Travers made a total of 5 saves in the first half and was arguably Bournemouth’s most impressive player on the pitch.

The second-half was more or less one-way traffic following the dismissal of Foyth, with Bournemouth throwing everything at Spurs to get a winner. Despite their obvious numerical advantage, the Cherries found it difficult to unlock a stubborn Spurs side, who were looking to get at least a point out of the game to gain some ground on their rivals in the top-four race. It looked as if their pursuit of a winner was going to end in disappointment but Nathan Ake ensured that a controversial game had a dramatic end to it.
