The sports category of video games is one of the most popular. Fans love to feel close to their favourite team or athlete, so being able to step into their virtual shoes is a great way to do that.

There are many popular sports video games, including a lot that have enjoyed decades-long runs with annual releases. Some of the big names you will recognise include FIFA, Madden, NBA 2K, F1, and NHL.

However, there are sports video games that are a little different. They offer a new perspective to the sport they are modelled on, creating a fun experience, unlike anything you’ve ever played before.

Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball

The 2005 film Dodgeball taught us all the “five Ds of dodgeball”: dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge. The comedy was a huge hit and created a lot of interest in the sport, for the developers of Blazing Lizard, this was the perfect sport to pair with the popular internet meme of the 2000s, pirates vs. ninjas.

Released on the Xbox 360 in 2008, Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball. Each side had a set of powers, such as cloaking, which adds an additional element of strategy to the game.

The game received mixed reviews, but it’s still a fun title to play, especially if you enjoy the classic meme.

Football Star Deluxe

Of course, there are plenty of new football games that hit the market each year, most notably the annual updates for FIFA and Pro Evo. However, there are also countless other titles that also make it to market.

Some are simulation games that try to recreate the real world as closely as possible, others have more arcade-like mechanics with a focus on fun instead of realism. Then there are the football-themed slot games that mix this popular game format with the world’s most-followed sport.

NASCAR Rumble

There is a big market for racing games, with developers creating different styles to cater for hardcore petrol heads that want realism and those that just want a fun game and to drive fast. NASCAR Rumble, an arcade-style game that was released for the original PlayStation in 2000. is definitely the latter.

It features power-ups, similar to what you would expect to find in Mario Kart that would send your or your opponents’ cars flying off the track in numerous amusing ways. Crashing into your opponents was also encouraged, with some races turning into complete chaos.

Despite being an incredibly popular game with many positive reviews, a second NASCAR Rumble game wasn’t released. However, an unlicensed sequel called Rumble Racing was made for the PlayStation 2 in 2001.

NASCAR Rumble contains several modes, single race, championship, and time trials – all of which are self-explanatory. The final mode, showdown, was a little different as the player would choose a circuit and power-up density and then compete in a single-lap shootout against a player of their choice to decide who was better.
