Chelsea Opinion: Blues must sell off Marcos Alonso to Real Madrid

According to a recent report by the Metro, Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso is being linked with a possible summer move to Real Madrid which would see him return to the club where he first started his footballing career.

Born in the famous city of Madrid, Alonso’s initial stages of development as a player all occurred within the Real Madrid Castilla academy. Currently earning wages in the region of £90,000-a-week, Alonso has had a career full of ups and downs.

It was eventually in 2010 that he was scouted as a potential talent and signed up by then-Premier League side Bolton Wanderers. Since making this switch, which certainly didn’t go to plan, he found himself in a difficult position.

After 3 years in England, he finally moved on to join Fiorentina in 2013. Following a failed loan spell at Sunderland as well, he was finally given his due opportunity by Viola later that year.

After making himself first choice at Fiorentina through hard work and dedication, Alonso was eventually scouted and signed by Chelsea. Considering that Antonio Conte was spot-on with his tactics all season, Alonso complemented the Italian’s style of play superbly.

Capable of bombarding down the flank, Alonso’s preference would certainly to be part of a back five where his responsibilities are a lot less vital. With an extra defender present to cover up for any spaces left out by the Spaniard, he needn’t worry too much about getting caught out of position but things have changed completely this season.

Since Maurizio Sarri took charge at the helm, Alonso has been forced to move back into the left-back role in a back four – the kind of blunder that cost the Blues a multitude of games over the opening months of the season.

He struggled to defend against overlapping runs and it seemed like almost anyone could beat Alonso for pace while he was tracking back.

All the attacking potential he showed over the course of last season were gone completely and it seemed like he was a different player. He’s struggled to get balls into the box from crosses this season and it almost looked like he was labouring to simply keep up with the pace that Sarri expects his team to play at.

The Spaniard played 31 times in the league this season and although he wasn’t as vital a player as he was the last term, he certainly did have his part to play.

Having notched up 2 goals and 6 assists for his efforts, Alonso hasn’t held out a move away in the summer. With Emerson seemingly stepping up to the plate, this will be the right time for the Blues to cash in on Alonso.
