After two frustrating transfer windows where Tottenham failed to add a single player to their squad, Mauricio Pochettino has to spend big this summer.
Tottenham were firmly in the title race but after the loss to Liverpool, Pochettino and co. scrambling for a top-four finish now.
Pochettino has done brilliantly, considering the club signed no player in the last two windows. However, if the Argentinean is to compete for the Premier League title next season as well as win trophies, he will need massive backing in the transfer market.
Spurs slipping out of the title race should be a wakeup call for Chairman Daniel Levy that the club doesn’t yet has the quality to bring trophies at the Hotspur Way. That being said, here are two players Tottenham should at least sign this summer.
First of all, Tottenham need a midfielder to replace the departed Mousa Dembele. And may be that could be the reason why the club are very much interested in signing Napoli starlet, Amadou Diawara.
Diawara, 21, was expected to get regular opportunities at Napoli following Jorginho’s summer move to Chelsea. But that hasn’t been the case at all as the Guinean has made just eight Serie A starts this season as manager Carlo Ancelotti has preferred the likes of Allan, Piotr Zielinksi and Fabian Ruiz ahead of him.
Tottenham certainly can provide Diawara with regular game time, with Pochettino renowned for blooding young talents. Diawara, however, will face competition at Spurs but he could be the perfect foil for Eric Dier or Moussa Sissoko against elite opposition.
Tottenham’s search for a back-up to Harry Kane is apparent, with Fernando Llorente’s contract expiring in June and Vincent Janssen completely out of favour under Pochettino.
Llorente has done very little to justify he is an ideal candidate to replace Kane when the England international is out injured or needs rest. Hence, Pochettino should aim to sign a centre-forward in the summer and should make a move for Liverpool star Daniel Sturridge.
Sturridge, 29, has already been linked with a move to Tottenham as the 29-year-old will become a free agent this summer. The Englishman has found very limited game time this season, with Jurgen Klopp preferring the likes of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane ahead of him.
Despite being injury prone, Sturridge can prove to be a useful back-up for Kane, who is an undisputed starter at Tottenham under Pochettino. The England international, who has over 100 goals for Liverpool, will be a better Plan B option for Spurs than Llorente or Janssen.

And on a potential free transfer this summer, the 29-year-old’s acquisition would represent a coup for Tottenham.
