Three of the biggest flops West Ham United have signed in recent times
West Ham United’s struggles seem to have no end in the ongoing campaign. Following a recent loss to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, the Hammers plummeted to a lowly 14th spot in the table.
After 13 league games so far, West Ham have managed to register 15 points and what’s worrisome is that they have conceded more goals than they have scored. With a goal difference of -9, things are looking far from peachy for Manuel Pellegrini and co.
The east Londoners have been through their fair share of managers in recent times but somehow, all of them end up disappointing after initial success. And the former Manchester City manager’s story is no different.
Although he has signed a good number of players since taking charge of the club, most of these new arrivals have been far from effective on the field. With that in mind, here are 3 players who have flopped the hardest at West Ham in recent times.
Carlos Sanchez
The 33-year-old joined West Ham from Serie A outfit Fiorentina in the summer of 2018 for a fee in the region of £4m. And since then, Sanchez has quickly become a forgotten figure at the club due to his lacklustre performances.
A defensive midfielder by trade, the Colombian has looked out of sorts for the most part and struggles to retain possession even against the mildest opponents.
From his first game till his most recent one, where he came on as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur, Sanchez has struggled massively.
Pablo Fornals
After impressing in the Euro U21 tournament, Fornals joined West Ham in a high-profile move worth £24m from La Liga outfit Villarreal. Despite featuring in 12 league games for the Hammers thus far, the Spaniard is yet to score or assist a single goal. And his lack of impact in front of the goal has compounded the club’s problems.
Fornals’ poor form has worsened West Ham’s dismal start. Placed a lowly 17th in the league standings, the Londoners are just 3 points ahead of the dreaded relegation zone. And after shelling out £24m, the 23-year-old has done nothing but disappoint.
Roberto
The goalkeeper seems unable to stop himself from making silly errors and much to Pellegrini’s chagrin, he committed yet another howler in the game against Tottenham. Lukasz Fabianski’s injury left the Hammers in a difficult position and as a result, they turned to Roberto, who joined earlier in the summer.
However, he has only made things worse for West Ham, who have conceded a whopping 23 goals in merely 13 league games thus far.
