Last season ended with Manchester City winning the league, Arsenal finishing out of the top four once again and dark horses Burnley ending up in a Europa League spot. The biggest shocks of the season, the Clarets finished seventh behind Chelsea and Arsenal and were able to fight for a chance in the Europa League.
While things haven’t gone their way this season, Burnley have still been performing well below par and currently sit two points off the drop, having lost 13 out of their 21 games. With the January window open, it gives Burnley a chance to improve their side and also let a few players go as they look to fight a relegation battle.
Recently returned from a loan spell with Ipswich Town, Walter’s future at Burnley looks bleak, to be honest. Despite arriving in July of 2017, the 33-year-old is yet to fit in at the club. He spent the last six months on loan at Ipswich, but before that, Walters only made six appearances for the Clarets, spending most of last season either on the bench or injured.
At 33, time is certainly running out for the forward. Given the fact that he is yet to open his account for Burnley, manager Sean Dyche would be hard-pressed to find a reason not to let him go.
A knee injury kept him from making more appearances last season before another injury to his hamstring kept him out of the first three months of the season. However, even though he’s fit and firing, Robbie Brady has been used sparingly by Burnley, making only five starts for the club even getting sent off once.
The Irish international is yet to open his account for the season and finished last season with just one goal to his name. With the January window open and Burnley looking to add reinforcements, selling Brady would be a good option for both parties as the 26-year-old will get a chance to play regular football.
The question for Sean Dyche to answer is, however, whether he believes that the former Manchester United youth academy star can live up to his potential.
The 34-year-old joined Burnley after being without a club for nearly three months with Preston North End letting him leave for free. But that was two years ago and since then, the club signed Joe Hart and even watched the resurgence of both Tom Heaton and Nick Pope. This means that the Clarets have not one but three good goal-keepers to rely on, thus ending any chance for the 34-year-old.
The former Manchester United star has made just two appearances this season, both in the Europa League, and is yet to make an appearance in the Premier League for Burnley. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, there is a chance that Burnley lets him leave now and maybe get some money back.
