Wolves Opinion: Nuno Santo should raid Liverpool for Rafael Camacho

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool starlet Rafael Camacho has been linked with a move to Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 18-year-old, who is out of contract at Anfield in 2020, has refused to sign a new deal due to lack of first-team opportunities and looked set to return to his homeland, with Sporting Lisbon understood to have expressed an interest in the Portuguese teenager. (h/t TEAMtalk)

Interestingly, Wolves were also very much alert to the contract situation of the disgruntled starlet and the club’s representatives have already held talks with the player’s agent with a view to a potential move in the summer. (h/t TEAMtalk)

With Nuno Espirito Santo working wonders at Molineux, the chance to link up with his fellow countryman is likely to appeal to the youngster.

Camacho was handed his senior Liverpool debut as a starter in a 2-1 defeat to Wolves in the third round of the FA Cup earlier in the season and the 18-year-old subsequently made his Premier League bow as a substitute in a 4-3 victory obe  Crystal Palace.

However, first-team opportunities haven’t come by as often as he would have liked and Liverpool look set to lose one of their highly-rated academy products. The Portuguese attacker has been a regular for the Liverpool U23 side in the Premier League 2 this season and has impressed with 8 goals and 5 assists from 13 appearances, including a stunning hat-trick in a 6-0 victory over Leicester City U23.

Still very much in the developmental stage of his career, Camacho has the talent and the potential to be a first-team regular at Anfield and the Reds might be left to rue his departure if he makes an impression elsewhere in the Premier League.

On the other hand, the acquisition of Rafael Camacho could be a massive coup for Wolves if the starlet does go on to fulfil his potential at Molineux. Wolves already have some top quality Portuguese talent in their ranks and it is not new to see the club linked with emerging Iberian starlets across the continent.

Camacho has been used as a right full-back in both of his senior appearances but the Portuguese international is essentially an attacking midfielder who likes to score goals. The Portuguese U20 international has played on either flank and also in a central attacking role at the youth and reserve levels for Liverpool, though he looked quite comfortable playing right-back in the senior team.

Known for lightning pace, power, dribbling, sharpness, agility and acceleration, Camacho likes to run with directness at his opposite number and brings his passing and crossing abilities into play to create chances from the wide areas. He is a pretty composed finisher as well, and has earned plaudits for his clinical nature in front of goal at the reserve level.

To go along with his attacking instincts, Camacho is also very calm and comfortable in possession and has the pace and the awareness to track back and help out in defence, which is the reason why he can fit into a full-back or a wing-back role.

A move to Molineux would be ideal for the 18-year-old as he can expect more regular minutes in the Premier League and also in the domestic cup competitions. His arrival would be a significant boost to Wolves’ squad depth and it is likely to help them increase competition for places in the final third, with the likes of Adama Traore and Helder Costa both enduring an inconsistent run in the Premier League this season. Also, Camacho’s defensive prowess means that Wolves can look at him as an emergency back-up for right wing-back Matt Doherty.
