Why Jarrad Branthwaite must snub Celtic and join Rangers
According to an earlier report by The Scottish Sun, Scottish rivals Celtic and Rangers are set to go head-to-head in a battle to sign Carlisle United defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
The report further states that he is valued at a fee of £1million. And another report by The Scottish Sun has stated that both scouts from clubs were in attendance as the 17-year-old played for the League Two outfit over the weekend.
A centre-back by trade, Branthwaite has burst onto the scene this term with some promising displays in the heart of the defence.
The report further states that Premier League clubs Leicester City, Arsenal and Manchester City are also linked with moves, thus illustrating the youngster’s rapid growth and development at Carlisle United in recent times.
As far as Celtic and Rangers are concerned, the Old Firm rivals recently took part in the Betfred Cup but the Hoops maintained their dominance as they lifted the trophy.
It remains to be seen as to who emerges victorious when it comes to signing Branthwaite but if new Carlisle boss’ words are anything to go by, the youngster is better than Dale Stephens, who currently plays for Premier League club Brighton, at 17 (h/t The Scottish Sun). That is quite a statement but as things stand, Branthwaite has the tools to evolve into a top-quality player in the near future.
Considering his age, the next step he makes could either make or break his career. The centre-back, who can also play as a defensive midfielder, is unlikely to break into Celtic’s or Rangers’ starting line-ups anytime soon.
However, considering the exponential growth and integration of younger players at the Ibrox under Steven Gerrard, perhaps Branthwaite would be better off snubbing Celtic and joining the Gers instead.
Since Gerrard’s appointment as head coach, Rangers have nurtured and developed some top-class talents within their ranks. And there’s no reason why he cannot do the same for Branthwaite. Hence, the youngster would be better off under Gerrard’s guidance for the time being at least.
