According to a report from Football.London, Tottenham are interested in Celta Vigo star Maxi Gomez as Mauricio Pochettino plots competition for Harry Kane next season. The same report claims West Ham and Barcelona also remain keen on the Uruguayan’s signature.
Maxi Gomez, 22, has contributed to nine goals in 22 league outings this term, supplying five assists as well. Should Celta Vigo lose their fight to remain in Spain’s top tier this season, the Uruguayan will certainly leave and there won’t be any shortage of buyers.
Keeping that in mind, Tottenham should beat the likes of West Ham and Barcelona to bag Maxi Gomez’s signature ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
Tottenham have paid a big price by not investing in the past two transfer windows, with a flurry of injuries to key players and back-to-back defeats against Burnley and Chelsea ruling Pochettino’s side out of the title race. There is a clear need for Pochettino to invest heavily in the summer transfer window as they move into a new era.
With Fernando Llorente very likely to leave the club following the expiry of his contract at the end of this campaign, the need for another striker to compete with the mercurial Kane has become of prime importance. Gomez is clearly capable of excelling in that regard.
Not only will he bring competition and cover for Kane but also will be a clear upgrade on the ageing Llorente. Gomez is a big, physical player who can outmuscle defenders in the box and score goals. He is not only a clinical finisher in front of goal but he can also contribute a lot with his ability to set up goals.
One of Gomez’s key attributes is his ability to run in behind defences, whilst his subtle movement and link-up play will also give a different dimension to Spurs’ play in the final third. Blessed with pace and power, the Uruguay international certainly has all the attributes to fit in perfectly at Tottenham. Furthermore, he is also quite clever with his passing and his aerial ability makes him a genuine threat from set-pieces.
Still only 22, Gomez has his best years ahead of him, and that said, Tottenham should not hesitate to splash the cash in him ahead of the upcoming season. Pochettino must do all that he can to convince Gomez to choose a move to Tottenham over West Ham and Barcelona- it could be the signing that takes the Argentine’s side to another level entirely.
