Why Watford should beat Spurs to sign Robert Skov next summer
According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are among a host of Premier League clubs who are interested in signing FC Copenhagen winger Robert Skov next summer, with Wolves, Watford and West Ham also keeping close tabs on the Denmark U21 international.
Skov has established himself as a prolific goalscorer in the Danish Superligaen this term, accumulating a staggering 22 goals and 6 assists from 24 appearances. The 22-year-old is currently regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in the Danish top flight and it is not a surprise to see some of the top Premier League clubs vying for his signature after a wonderful run this term.
A product of Danish club Silkeborg IF, Skov established himself as a seasoned campaigner for his boyhood club, amassing 23 goals and 20 assists from 106 appearances over the course of six seasons before signing for giants Copenhagen last summer. The Dane also impressed in the group stages of the Europa League this season, despite Copenhagen finishing bottom of the group. Having impressed for Silkeborg in the domestic league, Skov was named in Denmark’s provisional 35-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia but he failed to make the final 23.
Standing at 6ft.1 inch, Skov is essentially a right-winger by trade but he has also been used on the left-hand side at times. Skov is predominantly left-footed but he has earned plaudits for his ability to shoot and cross the ball with both feet. The youngster has proven his worth as an inverted winger this season, using his magical left foot to cut inside and fire shots on goal from inside as well as outside the box.
A fast, agile and fleet-footed creative ace, Skov combines his intricate first-touch and blistering pace with his trickery on the ball to run at defenders, often leaving them for dead with his sharpness and dribbling skills. Although he is not particularly a great crosser, the Dane is also adept at getting the ball into the box from the wide areas to create chances for his teammates.
Skov’s clinical finishing and composure in front of goal defies his tender years. He not only excels at creating chances with his pace and trickery but he is equally good at putting them away as well, making him an invaluable asset to any team as a goal-scoring winger.
The youngster has earned rave reviews as a set-piece specialist, being able to score from anywhere outside the box with his wonderful left-foot. Furthermore, he has an excellent shooting technique which allows him to put his foot through the ball with precision from all ranges.
To put things into perspective, a promising youngster like him would be an ideal signing for all the aforementioned Premier League clubs but Watford can bag a massive coup if they can beat their rivals to get their hands on the highly-rated Danish prodigy next summer.
Watford have enjoyed a successful season in the Premier League under Javi Gracia, with the Hornets still very much in the race to claim the final Europa League qualification spot which would see them return to European competitions for the first time since 1983-84. Watford are currently not short of attacking options and the Hornets boast of the best scoring record outside the top six this season, having already scored 41 goals so far.
In Roberto Pereyra, Gerard Deulofeu, Troy Deeney and Andre Gray, Watford have plenty of quality in their attacking options but the right-wing is a position that requires some investment, with Will Hughes and Ken Sema currently the only options out wide on the right. Kiko Femenia is a versatile player who can be used on the right but neither the Spaniard nor Sema has really cemented their place in the first-team, which means that someone like Robert Skov can be the ideal man to provide cover and competition for Will Hughes.
