Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should go for Julian Brandt this summer?
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham are interested in a summer swoop for Bayer Leverkusen star Julian Brandt.
The German midfielder, 23, who has two years remaining on his current deal but with a release clause of £21.5m, is expected to attract plenty of interest from some of Europe’s biggest sides after a strong season with Leverkusen.
Julian Brandt bagged seven goals and 11 assists which helped Leverkusen to qualify for the Champions League next season. The Bundesliga outfit’s qualification for Champions League next season could see the 23-year-old stay put at the club, but Tottenham must trigger the midfielder’s release clause and sign him in the summer.
Tottenham have finished the 2018/19 campaign fourth on the table but Mauricio Pochettino has a glorious chance to win his first trophy when his side take on Liverpool in the Champions League final. Winning the Champions League without signing a single player in the past two transfer windows would represent a remarkable achievement for Spurs.
Regardless of what happens in the Champions League final, Pochettino needs reinforcements if he ever wants to have a shot at the Premier League title. The Argentinean tactician has an exciting squad but his team lacks depth, which was one of the crucial reasons why Spurs slipped out of the team title race at the end of March.
Above all, Christian Eriksen’s current deal with Spurs expires in the summer of 2020, and the Express reports that Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is keen to bring him to the Santiago Bernabeu. The Dane is one of the most important players for Pochettino, but the north London outfit could be forced into selling him this summer, rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.
If Eriksen is sold in this transfer window, Pochettino should look to replace him with Julian Brandt. Brandt is widely regarded as one of Germany’s finest prospects and could be a fantastic fit for Spurs. He is young, talented, exciting and a dynamic player with a massive potential to unlock. The 23-year-old can play in different attacking positions as well as in midfield, which means he’ll give Pochettino a lot of options.
The Germany international possess vision to unlock tightest of defences and is strong when it comes to creating attacking opportunities for his teammates. He has a good turn of pace, spatial awareness and ability to exploit even the smallest of spaces given by the opposition.

Furthermore, Brandt’s immense dribbling attributes, while proficiency in providing key passes to the forwards cannot be overlooked either.
Verdict
Brandt could be an astute acquisition for Tottenham by all means and would fit nicely in Pochettino’s system. Thus, it’s a signing Spurs cannot ignore this summer.
