Manchester United Opinion: Why Harry Maguire will be a top fit for United?
According to a report from the Evening Standard, Manchester United are set to revive their interest in Leicester City star Harry Maguire after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was given the green signal to pay a club record fee for the defender this summer.
Harry Maguire, 26, was targeted by former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho last summer, but the Portuguese didn’t receive the club’s backing to thrash out a deal for the central defender.
The 26-year-old defender enjoyed a stellar World Cup campaign in Russia, as he helped England reach the semi-finals of the glitz and glamour tournament in Russia. Following a fantastic World Cup, Maguire has enjoyed another outstanding season with Leicester City which has further enhanced his reputation.
Now, Solskjaer is willing to break the bank for Maguire and even shell out a club transfer record fee for the England international if required. But could Maguire be the solution to Manchester United’s defensive problems?
Certainly! Solskjaer is keen to strengthen United’s defence this summer after the club’s chances of playing Champions League football next season ended with a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at the weekend. The Red Devils have leaked goals at an alarming rate this season, with none of Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo proving their worth.
Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw have been the only United defenders to emerge out with some credit. Thus, there’s a clear need of defensive reinforcements over the summer and Solskjaer should definitely make a move for Maguire.
Maguire has been impressive for Leicester since joining from Hull City in the summer of 2017. He has also established himself as a regular fixture in the England national team under Gareth Southgate. The Englishman is a modern-day centre-half who is extremely comfortable on the ball. He is capable of retaining possession under pressure and can initiate attacks from the back.
The England international’s positioning and ability to anticipate danger are fantastic. That combined with his 6ft 4in frame and agility helps him compete with the strongest of attackers, making him the perfect centre-half for Manchester United.

Moreover, Maguire will be an upgrade over all the defenders Solskjaer currently has at his disposal.
Verdict
United must definitely break the bank for someone like Maguire to solve their defensive conundrum. Clearly, the Red Devils need new players and the England international would be a brilliant addition to any Premier League outfit, let alone Solskjaer’s team.
