Why Edinson Cavani would be wise to snub Arsenal and join Man United

Arsenal and Manchester United are interested in signing PSG striker Edinson Cavani, as per to El Chiringuito (h/t The Metro).

The 32-year-old has started just four games in the Ligue 1 this season due to an injury while he also faces increased competition for his place following Mauro Icardi’s arrival last summer. Cavani’s contract with the French champions is due to expire at the end of the season and the striker will be available on a free transfer if he refuses to agree on a new deal.

The Red Devils have been blighted by inconsistency this season, winning at the home of the champions one minute and then losing to the team bottom of the table the next.  Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to add an experienced finisher to his ranks – someone who can add some bite to his attack. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, despite hitting some mid-season form, are yet to truly assert themselves through the middle.

If slowly building up over several seasons is truly Solskjaer’s priority, it seems logical for him to persist with Rashford down the middle and keep drip-feeding game-time to Greenwood. But in Cavani, we’re talking about a striker with 198 goals over the last seven seasons and with the physicality to become a success in the Premier League.

Goals win games – and United need far more goals to win games. Cavani has proven himself as an out-and-out goalscorer over the past few seasons.

Arsenal, on the other hand, don’t exactly look in desperate need of more options upfront due to the presence of both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. They also have exciting Brazilian youngster Gabriel Martinelli coming through but it would be hard for any top club to turn down a transfer for a veteran like Cavani.

Cavani is PSG’s all-time leading scorer and has won a host of major honours in his time at the Parc des Princes. However, he has struggled for first-team action this season after the arrival of Icardi from Inter Milan

Verdict

Manchester United do not have a centre-forward and have often used Anthony Martial in that position. Signing someone like Cavani would be a major boost for Solskjaer’s side, which is fighting for a top-four finish. Arsenal already have 2 lethal strikers in Aubameyang and Lacazette at their disposal and the competition for places is more at the Emirates. Thus, Cavani would be wise to snub Arsenal and move to United should the Red Devils come calling.
