Tottenham Opinion: Why Thomas Strakosha will be a brilliant fit at Spurs?
According to a report from the Sun, Tottenham are preparing a move for Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha.
The north Londoners have watched the Albania international on various occasions this season. The 24-year-old has kept nine clean sheets this season and his form between the sticks has caught the attention of Tottenham, who will have to pay in the region of £35 million to acquire the goalkeeper’s signature, adds the report.
Tottenham have one of Europe’s best goalkeepers in Hugo Lloris but his form has come under a lot of scrutiny this season. After helping France lift the World Cup in Russia last summer, Lloris has struggled royally between the sticks and made a big blunder against Liverpool to cost Spurs a crucial point as they fight for a place in the top four.
Lloris’s mistake granted Liverpool a 2-1 victory at Anfield. It was a mistake you wouldn’t expect from a stopper of that quality or experience to make, especially in a game where the stakes are too high. But that wasn’t the only howler the French international committed this season, he’s been at the firing line on various occasions for the last couple of campaigns now.
If Tottenham are aspiring to challenge for the title and major honours, then the goalkeeping department is something Mauricio Pochettino needs to start looking at. There’s no denying Lloris’ quality and experience but at the moment he isn’t providing the stability and calmness to the backline he’s generally known for.
And regardless of Pochettino backing the Frenchman and the goalkeeper starting in the 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace, it’s high time the Tottenham manager looks beyond Lloris. Thomas Strakosha could be ideal to replace the error-strewn Lloris at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season.
Strakosha is one of the very highly-rated goalkeepers in the Serie A. He has already over 100 appearances for Lazio under his belt and possesses all of the attributes required to thrive in the Premier League. Not only has the Albanian shown he is a top shot-stopper, but is a good distributor of the ball as well, something Lloris lacks in him.
Verdict
Much will depend on how much longer Mauricio Pochettino believes Lloris can continue playing at the highest level, but as things stand, Tottenham should make Strakosha a no.1 priority this summer.
