Manchester City Opinion: Why Man City should go for Raphael Guerreiro?

According to a report from France Football, Manchester City are eyeing Borussia Dortmund wing-back, Raphael Guerreiro. (h/t Sport)

The Portuguese international, 25, has had an impressive season for Dortmund, having featured in more than one position. But the German club’s signing of Nico Schulz from Hoffenheim has left the wing-back’s future at Signal Iduna Park uncertain.

The report claims Dortmund would be prepared to sell Raphael Guerreiro, who has a contract until 2020, for €30m in the summer transfer window.

That being said, Manchester City must quickly move in to sign Raphael Guerreiro from Dortmund.

Pep Guardiola has just come off the back of his most successful season yet with Manchester City, in which the club won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. The Cityzens also won the Community Shield at the start of the season.

But Guardiola’s hunger for success and desire to improve could see Manchester City invest in the ongoing summer transfer window. One area he must prioritise solving is the left-back problem, with Benjamin Mendy having struggled with injuries since arriving at the Etihad from AS Monaco in 2017.

Mendy, 24, made just 14 appearances for Guardiola’s side this season after another injury ravaged campaign. He started only five times for City in the 2017-18 season having suffered similar injury hell – damaging the cruciate ligaments in his right knee only two months after completing his move from Monaco.

In the Frenchman’s absence, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabian Delph have rotated at left-back. In fact, Zinchenko has made the left-back position his own this season with consistent displays. However, Guardiola cannot rely upon the young Ukrainian for the entire season and with Mendy’s knee injury problems, signing Raphael Guerreiro would make sense.

Guerreiro is a highly versatile player, thanks to his ability to play anywhere along the left flank as well as in central midfield. He is an attacking player that can create and score goals in equal measure. A fantastic crosser of the ball, the Portuguese uses his pace to stretch the opposition rearguard and provides width to his team. Not to forget, Guerreiro is no slouch defensively and is a competent defender in 1v1 situations.

At City, the 25-year-old could replace Mendy at left-back and or compete with the Frenchman and Zinchenko for a place in the team. He could also potentially replace Leroy Sane, who is heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

Verdict

City could solve multiple problems if they can manage to sign Guerreiro in the summer and Guardiola should definitely splash the cash the sign the Portuguese.
